About me

OK, from the top:

I got my BA (history) and M.Ed from the University of Florida, in part funded by a National Merit Scholarship.

In 2002 I started teaching middle school just south of Atlanta. I was lucky to get the chance to completely design and teach my own course in ‘media and creativity,’ which I taught for four years; students did things like design web pages, deconstruct movies, analyze TV commercials, and shoot short films. Well, that’s what I taught them to do, anyway; they also did things like trip over chairs and accuse one another of passing gas, but these were not really unique to my course (I think).

After five years of teaching, I spent some time as a freelance graphic and web designer, and collaborated on several research projects with the wonderful students and faculty in UF’s edtech program.

Recently, I’ve started work as an instructional designer at UF’s Center for Instructional Technology and Training, working with UF faculty and other clients to create online courses.a drawing of some horses

My Big Goal right now is start work on my PhD in 2009; after scoring a 1590 on my GRE, I’m hoping to get funding in a program that fits me well–but it’s a tough market, and a lot of really qualified people have the same goal. So, I’m trying to get some experience and publications in the next few months that will help me out.

Some of my research interests include:

  • Web 2.0
  • information visualization
  • personal knowledge management
  • personal learning networks
  • free and open-source software

If, Gentle Reader, you still desire greater knowledge of me, you are not out of luck. Check out my CV, my portfolio, or my flickr photos. You can also contact me, if that’s your style.

Oh and, for the record: the opinions spewed forth in this blog are entirely my own, and don’t necessarily reflect those of my employers.  Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.
